create digram clear for each of the three assays based completely on stuff in proposal, UV absorption, photostability, marine safety. Topic: Photoprotective Potential and Ecotoxicological Evaluation of EGCG from Green Tea as Sustainable Marine-Friendly UV-Blocking Ingredient Broad Goal: Many chemical sunscreens today contain ingredients like oxybenzone and octinoxate, which help block UV but are not only harmful to humans but also marine life. Even small amounts of oxybenzone can harm reefs by infecting algae with viruses, leading to coral bleaching (Danovaro et al., 2008), and can also lead to DNA damage in some organisms. Octinoxate is toxic to aquatic invertebrates and algae and creates oxidative stress that is stored in the food chain (Chatzigianni et al., 2022). Oxybenzone and octinoxate can affect human hormones (Suh et al., 2020; Ruszkiewicz et al., 2017), it can also affect thyroid function and create skin reactions after being absorbed into the bloodstream. The toxicity of these chemicals has therefore led to bans in states like Hawaii, with Maui County and Hawaii County having even stricter regulations in order to protect the coral reefs there since 2021. On the other hand, bioactive molecules found in edible plants (e.g., polyphenols and flavonoids found in green tea and moringa leaves) naturally absorb UV radiation and have antioxidant properties that can help reduce skin damage (Cefali et al., 2022; Baldisserotto et al., 2018).
