A top-down, realistic ancient battlefield map showing Roman and Carthaginian army formations on a dry plain with the Aufidus River.

Top-down realistic ancient battlefield map, 1000px tall and 2800px wide, designed for virtual tabletop use at high resolution. The terrain is a wide, dry, open plain under a summer sky. The ground texture is a mix of sun-baked dirt, dust, and sparse yellow-brown grass, with occasional patches of scrub. Colors should be muted earth-tones for maximum tactical clarity. On the northern edge of the map, place a gently winding river representing the Aufidus. The river runs horizontally from left to right, occupying roughly the top 15% of the map’s height. The riverbanks are low, with a narrow strip of gravel and reeds. The Roman army stands near this river, anchoring its right flank upon it. The western (left) half of the map is the Roman side. Mark a large rectangular zone of open flat ground for Roman infantry in the center-left, leaving room behind them for depth in their formation. On the far left and far right flanks of the Roman zone, leave open ground for cavalry positions. This entire Roman half of the field should feel orderly and wide, emphasizing their deep, dense formation. The eastern (right) side of the map contains the Carthaginian position. The ground here is slightly rougher and more weathered, with subtle elevation variation and patches of darker scrub. In front of the Carthaginian infantry position, curve the terrain very slightly to echo the shape of their famous crescent formation, but do not draw units — only shape the land subtly to match that arc.
