The painting has a young older woman facing with her right side inside with her left side farther out towards the inside of the room. A dark brown book easel is on her right that reaches her the middle of her sleeves and has gold sides. It holds a single opened book that has off-white pages with a beige tint. Behind her are two curtains hold back on either side forming a triangle with the middle being black as the light comes from her right side illuminating the right side of the room. It creates a shadow/darkness in the center behind her. The color of the curtains blend from mahogany brown/red to a slightly light-yellow brown at the edges towards the wall. The young woman is wearing a dark coral shade with darker colored patterns throughout. The sleeves and kirtle are white with gold patterns stitched on it, with the outer dark coral sleeves being long hanging at the back half-way on the sides of her dress. She also wears a white chemise underneath the dark coral sleeves that is round and slightly puffy with gold stitched patterns. Another sleeve is underneath both previous sleeves that is simple, slightly ruffled covering her wrists and top part of her hands.
