The ground was covered in deep layer of slimy mud. Rats scurried along while we sat on the taller land in the trench. There were only a couple of centimetres between our heads and the surface level of the No Man’s Land. We clutched our rifles and shuffled about in our full military uniform. Artillery shells whizzed over our heads — reminding us that a single wrong movement could result in death. However, it was more monotonous than anything else. We all sat bored, watching water droplets drip from the earlier rainfall. We had to sit still to make sure our heads do not peak out, and silent so that every threat could be heard. See more
