I. The Problem: The Mental Health Crisis We are facing a significant mental health crisis. The pandemic, along with other factors, has severely impacted the mental health of millions of Americans. According nimh.nih.gov from the National Institute of Mental Health last accessed 2020, nearly one in five Americans suffers from a mental health disorder. The isolation and stress brought on by the pandemic only exacerbated these challenges, with anxiety and depression rates skyrocketing. The effects of mental health struggles are wide-reaching, affecting our relationships, work, and even our daily lives. For many, the loneliness and disconnect from others have been overwhelming, and for some, pets have been an essential source of comfort. However, not all pets are classified as emotional support animals. Unlike regular pets, which can offer companionship, only animals specifically designated as ESAs by licensed mental health professionals are recognized for their therapeutic benefits. According to aka.org from the American Kennel Club last accessed 2021, these animals provide more than just emotional comfort—they play a therapeutic role in helping individuals manage anxiety, depression, and other mental health conditions.
