Assignment Brief Aim All the engineering professional bodies emphasise the importance of being able to communicate ideas graphically. The aim of this assignment is to give you the opportunity to satisfy the needs of two of the learning outcomes for the Civil Engineering Technology module (listed on page 2). This requires that you are able to analyse and explain the basic principles of civil engineering and demonstrate how they are achieved through the production of appropriate construction details that meet current statutory requirements. Please note that the construction details are to be drawn by hand on A4 or A3 paper to a suitable scale. You must follow standard drawing conventions. Standard drawing templates will be provided. Requirements Suffolk New College is planning to increase its workshop facilities, by building a two-storey extension on the area between the existing South Building and Alexandra Park. The ground floor will consist of workshop facilities and the first floor, additional teaching / office space. (See Drawing). The building will include a 4-metre-deep basement over part of the floor area. This will provide much needed storage space. Before the basement is constructed, it has been decided to reconstruct the retaining wall that borders Alexandra Park. This is in a very poor condition, and there are concerns that if it is not done first, excavation of the basement might disturb it further. The building itself will be looked at in Assignment 2.
