This is a two-part studio assignment. For the first part, I want you to take a sheet of paper and make three different rounded forms (a cylinder, sphere, anything round) using the shading techniques called hatching, cross-hatching, and stippling. You can see examples of this technique in the image below. Be sure to sign your name on the sheet of paper as a contract that this is your own work. For the second part, you get to choose your artistic approach from ONE of the following three options. 1. Do 20 1-minute drawings of your hand. That is, set a timer for 1 minute, and in that time draw your hand in any format. Do this 20 times, making 20 different drawings. Your hand can be in the exact same position each time or you can vary it. Write a brief paragraph regarding the experience. 2. Take an original photograph (specifically for this assignment!!) that demonstrates one formal element and one principle of design very clearly. For example, I could take a photo of a sand dune at sunset. Imagine that it shows highly saturated reds and orange. It also probably shows rhythm and movement in the patterns that the wind has blown into the sand. Write a brief paragraph about how your photo shows your chosen element and principle of design well (see chapters 4 and 5 for a review). IMPORTANT: do not take a photo of a pre-existing work of art. If I take a photo of a poster of Leonardo da Vinci's Last Supper and discuss space and depth, as well as balance, this won't work. You need to See more
