My Lesson Plan: Lesson Title: Theme Theatre Grade Level: Third Grade Learning Objectives: Students will be able to identify theme as well as plot, summary, and central idea Students will be able to practice establishing their own themes by using randomly assigned characters, settings, plots, and themes to tell short story The teacher will play this video to teach kids the basics of theme: What is a Theme? | Story Elements for Kids | Reading Comprehension Learning Activity: After students finish watching the video and ask any questions they need, the teacher will number them off into roughly even groups of at least 4. Once they’ve been assigned groups, each group will come to the front of the room one-by-one. There will be four different buckets containing pieces of paper that the teacher organized before the lesson. Bucket 1: Vague Plot (treasure hunt, secret spy mission) Bucket 2: Character type (cowboys, astronauts, pirates) Bucket 3: Setting Bucket 4: Theme Each group member will then draw from a different bucket to set up the basis of the story. After that, each group will be tasked with putting on a short play that uses all of these randomly assigned features and still exhibits the central theme. Learning Game: The game will be actually putting on the play for the rest of the class. They will have a worksheet where they can write out their scripts and also write about how they feel like their theme was portrayed. Assessment: The end result of the play will be graded See more
