The Librairie — Architectural Description Concept The librairie is conceived as a place of medical knowledge in circulation, rooted in the history of the Maison des Médecins. It is not a library for prolonged reading, but a dense, curated space for discovery and purchase, where books are treated as tools of understanding rather than passive objects. The space privileges movement, curiosity, and visual layering, encouraging visitors to browse actively and intuitively. Spatial Organization The ground floor is structured around a central axis, echoing a circulatory system: In the center: multiple “endless bookstore” tables, aligned to form a continuous surface. Along the perimeter: ribcage-inspired shelving, creating a rhythm of vertical elements. Between tables and shelves: generous circulation paths (120–140 cm) allowing two-way movement and browsing. This organization creates a clear reading of space while maintaining density. Furniture and Display The furniture is custom-designed and architectural: Endless tables Depth: 60 cm Height: 72–75 cm Used for thematic selections, new releases, and curated medical topics Ribcage shelving system Vertical metal ribs spaced rhythmically Adjustable wooden or metal shelves Occasional deeper niches for objects or scientific artifacts Suspended glass frames Positioned above the central tables Display books, anatomical drawings, or scientific objects Evoke cabinets de curiosités without enclosing the space There are no reading corners; all See more
