🎭 Costume Design Concept for Dutchman (Set in 2021) 💡 Vision Summary: I chose to design costumes that reflect today’s fashion while still staying true to the characters’ core identities. By updating their looks to match modern streetwear and urban style, we show how conversations about race, power, and identity continue just in different clothes. 👗 CHARACTER COSTUME DESIGNS 1. Clay Look: A clean, polished Black man in his mid-20s wearing business-casual streetwear. Outfit: Slim-fit jogger chinos White sneakers (e.g., Nike Air Force 1s) Fitted button-up shirt under a casual bomber jacket Leather strap watch Minimal gold chain Color Palette: Earth tones – olive green, beige, white, gold Materials: Cotton, suede (for jacket), leather (accessories) Symbolism: His polished style reflects how Black men often feel the need to “dress up” to be accepted or safe in white spaces. 2. Lula Look: Trendy, edgy white woman, Gen Z/late millennial, with an artsy, TikTok-inspired style. Outfit: Oversized thrifted blazer Chunky boots (like Doc Martens) Plaid mini skirt Mesh top layered with a bralette Colorful eyeliner, hoop earrings Color Palette: Bright contrasts – reds, blacks, purples Materials: Polyester, mesh, faux leather Symbolism: Lula’s quirky, bold look shows how performative “wokeness” or rebellion can be.
