Monument Idea: "The Bridge of Friendship" What the Monument Looks Like The monument is a big bridge over a small pond. On one side is a giant eagle, which stands for the United States. On the other side is a big crane, which stands for Japan. The eagle and crane meet in the middle, their wings touching to make an arch. Along the bridge, there are signs that tell important moments in the U.S. and Japan relationship after World War II, like when America helped rebuild Japan and when they became allies. In the middle of the bridge, there is a quote from Ambassador Edwin O. Reischauer that says: “Equal partnership must be the watchword, for only in mutual respect can former adversaries become true allies.” The monument would be placed in Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park because it reminds people of the war’s impact and how the two countries made peace.
