There was no land, no sky, no living thing — only endless night. Out of that darkness came Raven. Raven was not yet the black-feathered bird we know today. In the old time, he was a great spirit with shimmering, shining feathers, able to change his shape as he pleased. Raven looked upon the empty void and thought, This will not do. The world needs life. So he stretched out his wings and began to create. With a flap of his feathers, he made the vast sky. With a beat of his wings, he pushed the sea into place. Where his wingtips touched, land rose up from the water. But Raven was not finished. He filled the seas with fish and whales, the land with animals, and the air with birds. Finally, he shaped the first people out of clay and breathed life into them. Raven loved the people he had made, and he wanted to give them gifts so they could live well. He placed fresh water in rivers, berries on bushes, and animals for hunting. He even gave humans fire, teaching them how to keep warm and cook their food. When his work was done, Raven flew high into the sky and let his feathers turn black as night — a reminder of the darkness he had come from, and of the gifts he had given to all living things.
