When they got there, they sat down, and the teacher started class. He began to talk about the Acadian Expulsion—for a long, long time. But while he was talking, boredom took over, and Luke and Claire fell asleep. When they woke up, they were in bed at a house, where a woman named Jeanne Dugas mistook them for her children, saying, “Kids, wake up! Your father wants to say goodbye before he heads to work.” They screamed and ran out of the house. That’s when they saw horses about five minutes away. They could also see big, tall soldiers with large guns getting off their horses and running over to houses, banging on doors and yelling, “You’ve got five minutes to pack up, get out, and get down to the harbour! This is your last warning.” Everyone was screaming and running out of their houses to get to the harbour, but Claire and Luke got lost in the crowd. That’s when the lady, Jeanne Dugas, who thought they were her children, hugged them tight. They were also hugged by a large man named Joseph Broussard dit Beausoleil, who was their “father.” He started pulling them to the harbour, but they got lost in the crowd.
