I ventured back to the place where I found you A long, arduous journey, full of bumpy roads cheap hotels and familiar strangers who understood the wanderlust — The undying wish to recover what you lost someplace else I thought I could find you again Truth is, you were never lost You haunt me Not like a phantom, or a poltergeist But — like a friendly ghost Who offers hugs and kisses and wraps your arms around me Telling me that life is still worth living Even if you decided it no longer was You send me on my way To keep living, to keep breathing, Even with the hurt and despair The constant rush of the freeway And the rudeness that has become so commonplace these days that it is mistaken for manners The screams of the fighter jets Flying low overhead send me back inside this sunny summer day to soak up the darkness And weep in my sheets until no more tears come When I get there You whisper “Joy is not dead” “It never dies” Believe me.
