Shakespeare uses Iago to manipulate Othello's perception of reality, ultimately leading to fatal consequences. Poe’s narrator crafts his own obsessive story to give reason for his thoughts and behaviours, distorting reality within himself. In both texts, the instability of the mind blurs the line between perception and reality. This demonstrates how a fragile, manipulative storytelling nature can influence human behavior and lead to tragic consequences.
