Many animals came to compete, including Mountain Goat's sons from the far north. The goats were mocked for their thick bodies and awkward looks, and their offering of huckleberries was rejected. One disheartened goat was cheered up when his brothers planted a huckleberry bush for him to eat from, restoring his self-respect. Though no one expected the goats to succeed, they stunned everyone by running together and skillfully crossing a dangerous cliff face that others couldn’t manage, easily winning the race. This act changed public opinion, and the once-discarded huckleberries were honored. Eagle tasted them, called them "sweet berry," and from that planted bush came all the huckleberries in the region. Despite their victory, the goats didn’t boast or try to claim Eagle. They quietly returned home to the mountains. Eagle, moved by their dignity and grace, followed them. Along the way, she noticed how beautiful and gentle they were in their natural environment. She cared for Old Goat, married the eldest son, and remained in the mountains, where she still builds her nest.
